I have had great pleasure watching the deer in the wheat field surrounding our house this spring. They have walked close to the house numerous times. One night, they were standing on our sidewalk and set off our front door camera.
A doe and fawn have appeared in our front yard numerous times. I find myself searching for them when I pass a window...especially in the morning and evening. This morning they were along the driveway and the fawn was running along the edge. Just like a child, he never ventured very far knowing his protection was his mother.
Wheat harvest is upon us, so the fun of watching the deer will be coming to an end, as they will take cover elsewhere once the wheat is off. Part of me is sad to see them go, but reality is that life changes, and after all farming is our livelihood.
I’m sure for the deer there will be a moment of panic when the big green Deere combine rolls into the field. The solace and comfort of their cover will quickly disappear forcing them to head for trees or another field with corn or soybeans.
We too have moments in our lives when we panic. Our surroundings may change gradually, or even suddenly. Our lives are always evolving just like the seasons and the crop changes force the deer to move.
God gave animals instincts to protect themselves and their young against danger, but we have much more. When Jesus ascended to heaven, He sent us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us discern when danger is approaching, and how to make wise biblical decisions. He also brings us comfort to withstand the turmoil of life.
I will miss the calmness I have watching the deer when they are forced to leave, but life is about change. God will give me a new focus, maybe the birds at the finches, the hummingbirds, or the bunnies hopping in the yard.
What I will not lose are the lessons the deer taught me. Their calmness, protectiveness, and stature remind me of the Holy Spirit in our lives. May you and I always focus on the One who is always with us, enabling us to achieve more than we can on our own.
He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. (Psalm 18:33)
As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. (Psalm 42:1)
But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. (John 14:26-27)
